Technical Specialist
Creative Arts & Technology

My studies were in Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University, which was a mixed bag. I lost the darkroom facilities I'd moved for. I explored other creative outlets, but many were too expensive. I found my way back to photography using a cheap scanner and old computer, eventually creating stereophotography installations. After graduating, I began photographing the local music scene. My first "paid" gig was for free drinks, but I learned a lot. For a decade I continued, becoming a contributor for Getty Images, amassing a large image archive and shooting for major national publications. As a technician, I’ve enjoyed developing solutions that make it simple and inexpensive for students to realise their ideas, whether it be digital, print or making connections across disciplines.

I developed a method for quickly and cheaply binding multi-signature books a few years ago. Though I’ve helped students make books themselves this way, I’ve never had the opportunity myself. So I wrote a book from my own point of view. This book contains images and memories made working as a photographer of (mostly) live music events for Getty Images for a decade.

My greatest pleasure as a technician comes from helping students make creative connections that help them realise their ideas. Also, I take great pride in supporting learning by ensuring students have access to great facilities and don’t face the same issues I did when I studied.
