Jane Taylor

Technical Specialist
Knitwear

Jane Taylor completed a BSc in Textile and Knitwear Technology and Design in 1992, beginning her career as a knitwear designer in industry. She later trained as a secondary school teacher in Design Technology, before transitioning into higher education as a Technical Instructor in Knit at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol. It was during her time at UWE that Jane began to develop her personal knitwear practice, focusing on shaped knits with minimal seams and integral elements. In 2010, she pursued a Master’s degree at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) to explore these themes further, culminating in a PhD in 2015. Jane joined the NTU knitwear team in 2012 and became a permanent technician in the Power Knit department in 2015. Her role continues to challenge and expand her expertise beyond traditional plain knitting, as she supports students in developing innovative and experimental knitwear solutions.

For this exhibition piece, I decided to revisit my PhD research with the aim of further developing some of the techniques I originally explored—this time without the constraint of creating a seamless garment. It has been over ten years since I last engaged with these knit programs, and having the opportunity to work with them again and apply my new knowledge has been a rewarding and insightful excercise.
