Jayne Childs

Senior Tecnician
Garment Construction

Alongside part-time work in the Fashion Studio, I’m the Research Assistant in the Nottingham Trent University Lace Archive. Outside of NTU, my creative practice is as a textile artist working in embroidered lace.  Careful study takes my work beyond nostalgia to highlight technical detail and hidden marks. Past work incorporated technical drafts from a now demolished lace curtain factory. They are covered in words, marks and codes which would have been translated by factory hands to make the lace. I have used laser cutting and digital embroidery to bring these marks back into focus.   Various embroidery styles highlight the craftwork within the 'machine-made'; my lace is drawn, digitised, finished- all in my Nottinghamshire studio.

Recently I've been exploring local folklore and children’s tales using embroidery and laser cutting, a new creative departure. I started with the ‘Nine O’clock Horses’ and have just completed works around ‘Bel the Giant’. These pieces are inspired by that research.

Most of my other work is carried out alone, so I love working with students when I can. They are so creative and make me see the world in a new way!
