Katherine Betteridge is a Technician at Nottingham Trent University, specializing in costume, theatre, and historical fashion. She graduated from the Arts University Bournemouth in 2015, receiving The Costume Society’s prestigious Patterns of Fashion Award. Katherine joined NTU in 2016 and became a permanent member of the technical team in 2019. Her career spans a wide range of theatrical and touring productions, including multiple Shakespeare tours, musical theatre performances, and the CBeebies In the Night Garden live tour. Prior to her role at NTU, Katherine served as Head of Costume aboard the Disney Fantasy Cruise Ship. Her work with Disney encompassed projects across the Marvel, Star Wars, and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises, as well as beloved classic characters such as Mickey Mouse and Princesses such as Elsa & Anna. Disney stage shows including Aladdin: The Musical Spectacular, Disney’s Believe, Disney’s Wishes, and numerous epic installations for Halloween and Christmas.
In 2015, Katherine Betteridge produced a historically accurate reproduction of an early 17th-century jacket for The Costume Society’s “Patterns of Fashion” award. The original garment is featured in the Portrait of Margaret Layton at the V&A Museum, displayed alongside the painting in remarkably well-preserved condition. Katherine’s replica was entirely hand-sewn and hand-embroidered, employing authentic period techniques, materials, and embellishments. The project spanned over five months showcasing her dedication and passion for historical costume construction.
It's amazing to see each new year group begin at NTU as shy students and leave as confident professionals ready to explore the industry. Being a costume technician we get to explore and share so many creative and exciting projects with them and it’s an honour to see their passion and skillsets blossom and grow.
