Paula Love

Technical Specialist
Print Making

I studied Fine Art Sculpture in Leicester many years ago, where I developed a strong sense of spatial awareness, practical making skills, and a mindset that encourages thinking outside the box. I began working as a technician at NTU over 20 years ago, initially focusing on the digital textile printer—a role that sparked new creative directions for me. Since then, my practice has continued to evolve. Outside of work, I enjoy photography, which has often served as a foundation for fabric designs. More recently, my role has expanded to include book arts and printmaking, giving me the chance to explore new creative formats and processes. I'm always looking for ways to blend technical expertise with artistic exploration.

Clare Godden and I took on the coordination of Tree Trail Tuesday a year ago—a weekly opportunity for staff to step outside, connect with nature, and this year, to explore their creativity. I've used the trees we've visited as inspiration for a new project: a book of prints that experiments with both unfamiliar book formats and printmaking techniques. It's been a chance to combine artistic exploration with the natural environment in a meaningful way.

Funniest question: How long is a metre and how many bikinis can I get out of a metre of fabric? The answer going through my head: A meter is roughly the length of a standard baseball bat, a little longer than a yardstick.  As for bikinis? Well, that depends on your design ambitions and how daring your beachwear dreams are. Typically, one meter of fabric might cover one modest bikini—because, let’s be honest, fabric doesn’t stretch reality quite that far. But if you’re feeling crafty and frugal, maybe you can squeeze out two tiny bikinis... or just one and a matching napkin.
