3D Make
Throughout my life I have always had a fascination for surface design and textiles. I studied Surface Pattern Design at Swansea Metropolitan University where I had my first experience of laser cutting. Through various roles in education, I have gained a wide knowledge of creative techniques. However, becoming the laser technician at NTU gave me the opportunity to focus and develop my skills in this area. When 3D printing became part of my role it gave me a new insight into how this technology could be used across a wide variety of disciplines, combining digital design with traditional crafts and processes. As a technician I support and collaborate with students and staff, each bringing their own unique challenges and inspirations. It is through these interactions that I am able to create a variety of samples and outcomes and further discover the versatility of laser cutting and 3D print.
Using neo gothic architect Watson Fothergill as my inspiration, I have created a piece that showcases a variety of laser cutting and 3D print techniques. Watson Fothergill’s office was designed as a catalogue of architectural features to show clients. In the same way my piece is a patchwork of layered elements demonstrating the versatility of laser cutting and 3D printing, combining materials both familiar and unique.
“You were always so accommodating and treated my projects with such care and attention. I always felt supported, and I really appreciated how much time you gave me.” Harry Cheney, Graphic Design.
